What emails DetectID sends, and why — keeping your inbox clean

The full list of emails DetectID sends, categorised as essential, transactional, or marketing. Most users see fewer than five DetectID emails per month.

Email overload is a real thing, and we don’t want DetectID to add to it. This is the full list of every email we send, why we send it, and which ones you can turn off. Total volume is deliberately low — most users see fewer than five DetectID emails a month.

The DetectID homepage — most users only see emails after they sign up here.
Most DetectID users see fewer than five emails per month, mostly triggered by their own activity on the site.

Three categories of email

Everything DetectID sends falls into one of three buckets:

  • Essential.Required for the service to work — sign-in links, billing receipts, security notifications. Can’t be turned off.
  • Transactional.Triggered by something you did or something happened in your account — rally summary, Find of the Week notification, Rally Captain qualification. Mostly opt-out controls in settings.
  • Marketing.Anything we’d send to draw you back in or tell you about features. Strictly opt-in — off by default.

Essential emails (can’t turn off)

Sign-in magic link

Sent each time you request to sign in. Contains a one-time link that expires after an hour. Volume: as often as you sign in. If you stay signed in on your devices, this is rare — maybe once every few months when you switch devices.

Transactional emails (opt-out)

The public feed that drives the weekly community digest.
The weekly digest summarises the standout public finds across the community — only sends on Sundays if there's activity.

Rally end-of-day summary

Sent the morning after a rally you joined ends. Contains your personal photo book PDF link plus a brief recap of the rally (attendee count, total finds, top finds). Volume: only when you actually attend a rally.

Rally Captain qualification

If a rally you organised qualified you as a Captain (10+ attendees, 20+ finds), you get this email confirming your new Captain expiry date. Volume: once per qualifying rally. Can’t reasonably turn off — you should know when you’ve been credited Premium access.

Find of the Week feature

Sent only if your find was chosen as Find of the Week. One email per feature. Off by checkbox in Settings (the “Find of the Week notifications” toggle) if you prefer not to know — the feature still happens, you just don’t get the notification.

Weekly community digest

A Sunday round-up of the week’s standout public finds across the community. Only sends if there’s actually something worth reporting. Off by checkbox in Settings (the “Weekly community digest” toggle).

Where the email controls live

The opt-outable toggles are on a single screen atSettings → Profile alongside your bio. Two toggles today: weekly community digest and Find of the Week notifications. Both default on; toggle off any time.

Volume audit — typical detectorist’s month

A typical active detectorist who doesn’t run rallies and leaves the default opt-ins on:

  • 0–2 sign-in magic links (only if signing in on new devices).
  • 0–4 weekly digest emails (most weeks have community activity to summarise).
  • 0 Find of the Week emails unless you’re actually featured.

Roughly 2–6 emails per month. Less than most subscription services send in a week.

What we use email addresses for

Two things today:

  1. Sending the emails listed above.
  2. Verifying account ownership (sign-in, recovery).

Billing identification will be a third use once the payment flow ships.

We do not sell email addresses, share them with advertisers, share them with detector-brand partners, or use them for anything outside DetectID. The email address you provide is used by DetectID only.

If our emails aren’t arriving

  • Check your spam folder. First-time sign-ins occasionally land there.
  • Move one of our emails to your inbox. Future ones follow.
  • If you use a corporate email with aggressive filtering, ask your IT to allow admin@detectid.co.uk.
  • Some email providers (notably some @hotmail.com and @aol.com setups) silently drop legitimate mail. If you suspect this, switch to a more reliable provider for your DetectID account.

If you want a digest instead of individual emails

Comment digest is already a once-per-day digest. Rally summary is once per rally. We’ve deliberately bundled most things rather than sending per-event. If you’d like a different cadence (weekly digest, monthly digest of everything), let us know — we’re open to adding more digest options if there’s demand.

Common questions

Can I turn off the magic-link sign-in email?

No — it’s how sign-in works. Without it you can’t access your account. If you want it less frequent, stay signed in on your devices.

Will I get more emails if I’m a Premium subscriber?

No, plan tier doesn’t change email volume except for the billing receipt (Free doesn’t get those because there’s no billing).

Do you send physical mail?

No. DetectID is digital-only.

How long do you keep email addresses?

Until you delete your account. After deletion, your email is removed from our systems within 24 hours including from any marketing lists. Some legal records (billing receipts for tax compliance) may retain the email for up to seven years where required by HMRC.
